Having a baby for 1 day - De Humo TV

Updated: Feb 13, 2019

Nicaragua has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in Latin America. Thus the importance to write and produce creative and fun pieces on how to prevent pregnancies. What better way to avoid becoming a parent than getting to take care of a baby when you are 12 or 13 years old? With this idea, I contacted an organization working with a community in Managua. After school, kids were given baby simulators for 24 hours, they had to take care of the simulators and supply all their needs.

The piece starts with vox populi on why it is important to educate yourself on how to prevent pregnancies and then proceeded to talk about the baby simulators and what exactly they would do.

The kids were very excited with the idea of taking care of a baby all by themselves, for that reason we decided spend the rest of the day and part of the night with a couple of them.

José and the girls described how the simulators work and how difficult it is to take care of a baby, specially when you are young and you have homework to do. It was easy to see they were feeling overwhelmed by the situation. Next day they had to share their experience with the rest of the group. I finished the piece with their opinions on why it is important to wait to have sex and if you are sexually active, you must use protection.
